The Commission’s Launchpad listing brought implementation teams and other wallet participants into a shared programme.

A digital identity system can make transactions easier while concentrating the conditions for taking part in ordinary life. Its legitimacy depends on the freedom and remedies of the person using it, not simply on the smoothness of a demonstration.

The European Commission's official programme placed EUDI Wallets Launchpad 2.0 in Brussels on October 29–30. The invitation-only programme listed national wallet teams, pilot projects, certification bodies and other participants for tests, demonstrations and implementation workshops. The programme establishes the scheduled implementation event; it does not demonstrate national rollout completion or the behavior of every wallet in use. [s1]

Testing across borders can expose failures before citizens encounter them. It should also test what happens when a person cannot use a device, loses access or disputes an identity record. A system designed around successful authentication can neglect the people for whom authentication fails.

Privacy promises need to remain practical. The ability to share fewer details is valuable, but users also need to understand who requests information, why it is needed and whether an alternative route remains usable. Formal choice can become hollow if essential institutions make the digital option the only workable one.

The human-centered standard is a person's continuing ability to participate without surrendering unnecessary data or becoming dependent on an opaque gatekeeper. Europe's implementation work is worth following closely. Technical compatibility is one test; freedom to opt out is another.

What we do not know

  • Q: Does the event establish completed rollout? A: No. The official page describes testing, demonstrations and workshops, not verified completion across Member States.
  • Q: Are digital wallets the beginning of phasing out cash entirely?
